Best Time To Tweet and Post On Facebook and Twitter

Sean Clark     seanclark.com

One thing that has always drawn me to online business is the access to data it gives you, that you can then use to help make business decisions.

I am not suggesting data alone is the answer to all the decisions we make in business, but it does go a long way in proving or disproving the viability of certain actions.

In my experience many companies are very bad at using data, they often collect it but do not spend enough time analysing it and trying to draw actionable conclusions from it.

5 Tips for Terrific Power Tweeting

Jeff Bullas     jeffbullas.com

Twitter has been my blogs content distribution powerhouse since the day I hit the “publish” button on my first blog post.

It allows me to tweet information to the world in real time with simplicity and no fuss.

All you need is good headline, a shortened link and some hashtags (if you don’t know what a hashtag is I will fill you in soon)

When I started on Twitter I was like a mad monk, tweeting here and chirping there. Chasing followers who didn’t care about social media but just because they had large follower counts.

Finally, I learned how to build an online tribe.

Connect to Global Tribes

One of social media’s  real strengths is to connect global tribes who are passionate about their interests. It could be photography, gaming or gummy bears.

In the past “Tribes” met in town halls and coffee shops. Now we create virtual communities online that can use social media platforms and technology to hangout (hence the term applied by Google+ to its groups feature “Hangouts”) and talk about their “stuff” in words that are often incomprehensible to an outsider.

The opportunities are now about abundance rather than scarcity.

Twitter Header Design: What You Need to Know

Adam Justice     socialmediasun.com

Last Week Twitter introduced an updated profile design based on a prominent header image. The change was designed to enhance the enhanced profile pages that Twitter launched for advertisers, which also allowed businesses to pin tweets. The new design overlays your avatar, bio, link, name and location over the header, which is roughly displayed as 520×260.

It’s really a toss up over whether the enhanced profile with a header or the traditional profile is more aesthetically appealing. Since there is a lot of text and your avatar displayed over the image, it is very easy for beginners to make their Twitter profile look worse. At the moment the new header is optional, and your profile will keep its traditional layout unless you upload a header image. Here are some things you need to know in regards to this latest Twitter change, which is drastic in terms of Twitter upgrades.

Keep Your Background in Mind

Before you open up Photoshop (or Paint, which appears to be popular among Twitter users wanting to try out the new header feature) upload a basic image and give your overall design some thought. If you’ve invested heavily in a background image, or especially like your current design, adding the header may not be the best move. You’ll want to make sure that your overall design expresses some form of brand continuity, and integrating a header may require a new background to keep your design from feeling redundant, crowded, cheap or unusual.

The $1.3 Trillion Price Of Not Tweeting At Work

Ryan Holmes     Fast Company

On June 6, Larry Ellison–CEO of Oracle, one of the largest and most advanced computer technology corporations in the world–tweeted for the very first time. In doing so, he joined a club that remains surprisingly elite. Among CEOs of the world’s Fortune 500 companies, a mere 20 have Twitter accounts. Ellison, by the way, hasn’t been tweeting at work since.

As social media spreads around the globe, one enclave has proven stubbornly resistant: the boardroom. Within the C-suite, perceptions remain that social media is at best a soft PR tool and at worst a time sink for already distracted employees. Without a push from the top, many of the biggest companies have been slow to take the social media plunge.

A new report from McKinsey Global Institute, however, makes the business case for social media a little easier to sell. According to an analysis of 4,200 companies by the business consulting giant, social technologies stand to unlock from $900 billion to $1.3 trillion in value. At the high end, that approaches Australia’s annual GDP. How’s that for a bottom line?

How Valid Is ROI or ROE With Fake Profiles?

Tracy Sestili     socialstrand.com

Recently, FastCompany wrote an article on buying Twitter followers and how a new app by StatusPeople.com called “Fakers” shows how many fake Twitter followers a particular Twitter handle has. The app categorizes your Twitter followers into three segments: Fake %, Inactive %, and Good %. Facebook also recently reported that they have 83M fake accounts or dupes in their system out of their 955 million users.

Full disclosure, @tracysestili has 0% fake, 4% inactive, and 96% good and @socialstrand has 1% fake, 5% inactive, and 94% good.

The questions have been raised on whether or not advertising on both these platforms is worth the bang for the buck. Having advertised on Twitter, I say it is. Because someone has to be “active” to click on your link in a promoted tweet. Now, they still could be fake, but most fake accounts if you look at them, never tweet. And I seriously doubt that fake accounts are out there helping Twitter out by clicking on your promoted tweet so that Twitter can make money.

5 Best Practices to Build Your Twitter Following

Jackie Roy     engage.tmgcustommedia.com

So, your company is on Twitter.

That’s great, but unfortunately Twitter isn’t The Field of Dreams, and if you build it (or set up an account) followers won’t always come.

Don’t worry, building an audience does take time, but if you have a strategy in place it doesn’t have to be a hassle.

What does it take to get some love from the Twitter-sphere?

Here are 5 best practices to build your company’s following:

1. Be consistent and tweet throughout the day.

On Twitter, 75 million users generate 140 million tweets per day. 92% of RTs on Twitter happen with the first hour and 97% of @mentions responding to a Tweet occur within that same time period.

Bottom-line: there is a lot going on.

So how do you get noticed with the people who matter most to your company? Tweet interesting content, create tweets between 120-130 characters to make it easy for your followers to RT, use links, @mention followers, and, most of all, be consistent.

Top 30 Women Tweeting About Tech

Holly Reisem Hanna     theworkathomewoman.com

Back in April I wrote a post called, The 25 Most Influential Women Tweeting About Entrepreneurship. The article was very popular, so popular that one of my Twitter followers suggested that I write an article on the top women tweeting about tech. She even went so far as to give me a list of suggestions, thanks @leesabarnes.

Recently an article was published on Business Live, saying that women were emerging as the dominant users of technology… “that declining prices and new devices that helped women perform multiple roles – parent, worker, care-giver, social organiser, cleaner, cook and so on – was driving this trend”.

With technology playing such a supportive role, in the lives of work at home women everywhere, I decided it was time to give some praise to the women who have paved the way.

Here are your top 30 women tweeting about tech (in random order).

One Tweet from a CEO is Worth 100 Tweets from Staff

Maddie Grant     socialmediatoday.com

I spoke last week at the Council of Manufacturing Associations, to an audience of 200 CEOs.  My panel was with Christopher Gahan, Chief of Staff for  Senator Toomey of PA, and Shana Glickfield of Beekeeper Group, a digital public affairs agency we work closely with.  The topic was Twitter and Advocacy.

I was impressed that there were several CEOs in the room actively using Twitter, but of course we got some pushback. One CEO in particular asked about frequency of tweeting – he said his staff told him he had to tweet regularly during the day to make it worthwhile. He had thrown his hands up in frustration and decided not to bother.

I told him I disagreed with what his staff said.

Yes, it doesn’t make much sense to start a Twitter account and not use it. Yes, the more you use it, the more you build audience and the more you build relationships.

But in my opinion, one good tweet from a CEO is worth more than 100 tweets from other staff.
